Amvic building a large waterproof basement

Building a Waterproof Basement

Amvic Insulating Concrete Formwork is one of the most cost effective and reliable building methods for basement construction around. Because the Amvic ICF system is a high strength ICF system, the concrete poured inside the polystyrene forms can be vibrated directly, thus achieving total compaction. Therefore, by specifying a waterproof concrete, Amvic ICF provides both the structural aspect of the basement wall and the waterproofing (or tanking) to the basement at the same time.

Large Basement Two-Stage Concrete Pour

The basement in the video below had an unusually large footprint for a single detached property, so in this instance the concreting was carried out over two separate days. The video was taken during the first half-storey height pour.

Since we were only concreting a half-storey height per day, we were able to use self-compacting waterproof concrete, forming a fully compacted, waterproof wall without having to vibrate the concrete.

If a wider wall is to be built on top of the basement (for example a stone or brick clad structure), the Amvic Corbel or Ledge block is built on a course just below ground level. The ledge block allows the Amvic concrete core to widen to 365mm, ready to support the wider structural wall above ground level.
